Lola was very much at the age where she should consider getting better paying jobs in her life or, at least, something with like, career progression or some shit. She should be working in an office or with Talon, but she kind of liked her bartending job because it suited her night owl tendencies and she got to wear a costume and she was good at it, which was all she really cared about. What if she moved to an office and it turned out that she sucked at filing paperwork, huh? No, she did much better with talking to drunk bros on student nights, looking like a disparaging teenager (the costume honestly did help), and memorising large drinks orders. Or, in this case, running out of a particular alcopop in the bar, which felt ridiculous, so she volunteered to get it from the back, forgetting that she was still a particularly lazy person and the crate seemed larger than usual. She sort of worked on hefting it along, then nudging it with a foot, then pleading with it (“Dude, come on, you know you want to spontaneously end up in the bar”).
<p>
Finally, right when she was going to shrug and find someone else to do it, because she knew when to admit defeat, the door to the stock room swung open, and she looked up hopefully. “Joel!” she greeted cheerily, tossing twin plaits back over her shoulder, which generally offered a strange and direct contrast to her attire- then again, she occasionally toyed with being a nun at work for the irony sometimes, but she liked Wednesday much more because she had enough hair for it. “Help a gal out? This box is the same size as Russia and for some reason, I can’t pick it up,” she explained, pretty sure she was losing her touch but also not too worried about it if Joel could do the heavy lifting instead. He probably could, because he was like… old.

Lola didn’t want to be, like, weird, but her boss was getting married so soon after meeting Tyler that she was a little alarmed by it. Like, did people really date for a few months and then marry because if so, she was going to have a few issues in a few months’ time and she wasn’t sure she was prepared for it. Not that she thought she was dating Jasper. She was… you know, doing something with him, it might be romantic, but it might also just be indigestion. She just didn’t want to ask him in the middle of a wedding like, ‘Love the centrepieces! So anyway, are we for realsies?’ because after months of fake dating, she still had no concept of how a real relationship worked and she didn’t want to tell him that. She knew she always seemed incredibly wise and knowledgeable, and she couldn’t have him figure out that she was basically stumbling into her romantic life whilst as blind as a bat, as always.
<p>
She’d invited him to the wedding because she needed a plus one, and he was an incredibly logical choice (like, first of all, other people thought they were dating, and secondly, they were a thing of an indeterminate nature now, like Flubber). The problem was, Lola didn’t want to annoy Noor and Tyler, didn’t think she could get fully drunk with Jasper there, and the idea of grinding on Jasper on the dance floor was something where she wasn’t sure if it would horrify her or her gentleman companion more. So, they kind of sat and looked around in mutual awkwardness. Maybe it was romantically mutual though, she didn’t know. “We could, uh… take a turn around the room,” she suggested, inadvertently depositing them in an Austen novel, as was proper for someone of her station. “Or we could, like, take a look around the hotel, maybe? No one will miss us,” she offered, not even sure what happened when you explored a hotel but what else could she suggest? The place didn’t have a convenient cinema, okay.

Lola had made a terrible mistake. She was never texting again. She was going to set her phone on fire and go to live in a hut in Mongolia because that was what she deserved for doing this to herself. She needed to pay penance for not checking her texts properly. It was all Nina’s fault anyway but Nina would be just fine living in a hut in the middle of nowhere, probably, and it didn’t matter because Nina wasn’t the one who had done the shameful thing! That was all Lola. It was just that she’d texted Nina to say she was going to Jasper’s and texted Jasper about going to his and texted Nina about how she didn’t like Jasper like that, Jesus, and texted Jasper about a stupid thing she’d seen and texted Nina about how she was really into this relationship somehow and texted Jasper about the tube delays and texted Jasper about how she couldn’t have a crush on Jasper because that was inappropriate to have on friends and then, at this point, very maturely, she had internally set herself on fire.
<p>
She had to explain things. She had to book flights to Mongolia. She had just wanted a very calm week and now she was considering a new career as an underwater basket weaver, which she wasn’t even qualified for! She didn’t know how to explain things but if she didn’t say something to Jasper, he might never leave his home again, and honestly, it would be good for all of them if he never saw her again. She knocked on his door, trying not to look like a smouldering wreck of a person, because, look, drunk people, top meme content, and being sarcastic – she was great at that! Feelings? Not so great. Needed to sort that out. She kind of wanted him not to answer his door because Jasper had sensed her deep embarrassment and had done the right thing- he had gone to Mongolia himself. It would be his really tall flatmate who would answer the door.
<p>
She wasn’t that lucky, and when Jasper answered, she ended up staring at him for a full ten seconds, trying to come up with something to say that wasn’t, ‘Shitty ability to use WhatsApp, amirite.’ She wished read receipts didn’t exist. “Sooooo… You haven’t seen your phone, right? Haha, great. So how are things? Not awkward at all, right?” Was she being casual enough? She could kind of feel her hair curling up, as though aware that she needed to look possibly like the worst human in the world.

Lola wasn’t used to getting drunk texts from Jasper, assuming that he might be too awkward to text her or too aware that she often working evenings, which was not a schedule she could help but did recognise didn’t help when he usually got lonely at night. As such, when she had received such badly texts, she spent a comically long time trying to decipher them before realising that it didn’t actually matter that he was texting her nonsense, but was drunk and probably needed her to check in on him, maybe take a bottle of whatever horrible thing he was drinking away. Fortunately, she had been lying around at home, watching a trashy film on television and updating Flash Foods’ Twitter occasionally, responding to questions, etc., so she already her phone on hand when she checked his location. She was weirded out to see he wasn’t in his apartment, but in the name of safe friendship procedures, the map told her he was in West London and she grabbed what she thought was relevant before heading out to collect him.
<p>
The bar she ended up outside was, frankly, ridiculously trendy and she double-checked the location on her phone but Jasper’s little dot was there, and he was still texting her. Maybe he’d gotten lost on the way to Bargain Booze or something, she didn’t know, but she went in anyway. She’d expected the lighting to be low, but for a moment, she was convinced she had walked into a pitch black room until she got used to the sight of the place, and then she began a careful round of the room, sure she would find him tucked away somewhere, obviously not hanging out at the bar being the centre of attention. Finally, she spotted tell-tale curly hair and excellent biceps. “George Lucas!” she sighed in relief, only realising how worried she’d been when she found he was okay and just drunk (so not okay at all, really). “Are you alright? I mean, are you thinking coherently?” she checked, hoping he wouldn’t do something disastrous at the sight of her.

Working in a largely student-y bar, Lola was used to the shifts when school years ended or people got distracted by exams. She didn’t have to do all of that anymore but she was witnessing it via Jasper, if he went back to school again, and had a lot of students flirt with her while she politely reminded them that she was literally dressed as a child. Nevertheless, the majority of the evening seemed rather relaxed; she hadn’t had to glare at anyone or deal with drunken idiots yet, although there was always time, and she was happy to collect up glasses, clean tables, and keep an eye on Flash Food’s Twitter by keeping her phone tucked into her pocket; she figured she had been at Adventure Bar long enough that no one really cared if she was on her phone. Nevertheless, in the midst of putting away clean glasses in a small lull between orders, she was distracted by someone approaching the bar with a look on their face that suggested that they were going to be difficult. She gave herself a moment of internal sighing before she went over.
<p>
She was, rather fortunately, used to this part of the job, where she had to be nice to everyone until she didn’t have to, and despite the royal glare she was getting, she decided that that wasn’t her problem. Maybe the lady had just had a bad day, you know? Maybe she had found out that she was out of lives in Candy Crush or she had lost a good Kahoot game, totally normal stuff. “Hey,” she greeted, edging around the other bartender who seemed to be studiously being useless, “What can I get you?”
