Aaron knew it was Valentine’s Day and all but that sort of played second fiddle to the fact that he and Fae had a job to do and he had no girlfriend to spoil on the holiday anyway (if he had, he wasn’t quite sure how he would have navigated this, what with also having a wife). He and Fae had to be seen in public being a functional couple anyway, so that was fine, and they had booked a rather generically normal restaurant, and been sat in a booth, which was good because conversation had easily turned to work. They’d moved a little closer so that they wouldn’t be overheard and, at some point, Aaron had stretched his arm around the back of the booth, inadvertently taking up some of Fae’s personal space- he had asked though, but he hadn’t enjoyed being too cramped there. Really, he thought they looked fine, very appropriately couple-like, even if the conversation was decidedly not romantic in the slightest.

“I think you’re the right. The count is hiding something but I don’t think it’s related to our stuff,” he admitted, feeling almost sad that they couldn’t do a side-investigation into the count in question but they didn’t really have the time or resources to do so, because they couldn’t be sure it was a magical mishap. “I just got hopeful when I saw him with Ellison,” he explained, thinking of one of their prime suspects at least, but then turning back to the slice of chocolate cake that sat between them. Yes, okay, this was work, but if work involved chocolate cake, he wasn’t going to argue. “This is really good too, why do we only get one?” he queried, wondering if after such a great meal, it was just decided that people only got one slice of cake to share – a little harsh, if you asked him.

Aaron would admit that he was rather excited for a change of scene after his and Fae’s last trip out of the city. They weren’t often given things that required this much planning- sometimes, they just did good old-fashioned clean-up- but terms like ‘undercover’ and ‘fancy brunch’ and ‘infiltrate a coven’ were quite new to him and he wanted to get started immediately. Unfortunately, that would be a bad move, so he recognised that although they would have things to do, first they had to learn their new backgrounds. They’d stopped off at the network house for a quick chat with Kat, but apart from picking up the information (provided in a helpful bag, because apparently Kat had included other things and then she’d winked at them, rather worryingly), there was nothing stopping them from checking into a hotel and beginning the task of looking like young socialites in town for a city break.

He'd let Fae open the door to their suite, and when they entered, he couldn’t help but look a little surprised; he knew what suite entailed, but he didn’t really make a habit of staying in them. Still, he recognised that as much as he would want to explore how many shower settings there were, he did also have to work and he dumped the bag onto a low sofa so he could remove his jacket. “Oh, well, I suppose it’ll do,” he joked, sighing tragically and looking around their apparent new living room. It looked great, but he did wonder about the logistics of two hunters hiding out amongst all this furniture. “What d’you wanna start with?”

about Aaron is hard-working, dedicated and, generally, not a bad person to know. He's a big believer in doing the right thing, but he doesn't mind if the way to get there is a little morally grey, and he recognises that not all decisions will come easily- for the most part, he's okay with that. He's probably best known through his work with the hunters network, where he generally either works long-term espionage missions with his partner, or is in training and will shamelessly put hunters through drills to keep them up to scratch. He's the sort of person who takes his work seriously, but his personal life is more about vaguely dorky things, like spontaneous singing and practising sleight-of-hand magic tricks, and he's very proud of that.

Aaron grew up away from London, and fell into hunting via his best friend; he needed a place to stay sometimes, and the Blacks provided that as long as he got stuck in with hunting practise. He spent his teen years being fairly reckless about it, but he's mellowed out since, and is more focused on getting the job done as opposed to being flashy with his hunting. He recognises that being a hunter nowadays isn't about mindless violence, and is more about keeping the people safe.

He's only just returned to London, and his new role involves seeking out and hunting down a shady witch's coven; to do so, Aaron and his hunting partner are going undercover as married socialite witches, which means that although his day job is working at the gym, he's now doing things like sipping champagne and discussing stock prices to keep an eye out for this coven. He's fairly good at getting information and getting the job done, so he doesn't anticipate this taking too long.

friends He'll probably meet people via the network, now that's he in town again, and have some rich bros that he's taking out for brunch. He's probably, y'know, trained with people in the network and chatted happily to them about work. For rich friends, he's probably like to pick their brains a little about shady witch activity, but will totes also discuss being rich with them or whatever socialites do.

enemies He's a hunter, so whatever works here? Otherwise, he's not generally one to make fast enemies, possessing very little of a temper, but if you find a reason to dislike him, go ahead.

lovers He's definitely had girlfriends in the past, probably even a few long-term ones, and they can have broken up for whatever reason, and while he'd probably aim for amicable exes, it could be that a few of them don't get on so well. He's good at things like bringing flowers and bad at things like being on time to dates.

Aaron Oakley had wanted to be a police officer once.

He had been a very respectable twenty-two when he had applied for the job, having done just enough research to get him through. He had not been very determined about it, though, taking on the idea because he thought that it was the right thing to do and the best thing for him to pursue at the time.

At the time, of course, he had been in the midst of some particularly law-breaking behaviour, but it hadn’t been wrong to do so. He had a rather good sense of right and wrong when it came down to it, understanding it was never black and white. He was good at working out when he needed to step into a situation, and when he should let it go.

This had been ingrained on him by a local hunter family, a phrase that he had only gotten used to in his late teens. When he’d been too young to understand but old enough to go there, he had thought that training regimes were just their way of bonding. Some families, like his own, had arguments and raised angry children; other families were more pragmatic about how to raise a child and did things like taught them how to throw a proper punch. They taught him too; this was the price he paid for having somewhere to stay when he needed it and by the time he had figured out why he needed to know it, he hadn’t considered it such a bad sacrifice at all. This wasn’t a family legacy borne out of cruelty and he respected that.

Having something to focus on helped for a while. He split his time between being at home, sullen and bored, and being at the Blacks, where there was always something to do. Being lazy was not an option and friendly though they were, he knew better than to push his luck; he never wanted to, which always helped.

He took well to weaponry. He began to understand the larger picture of supernatural life beyond their homes and why it was imperative that he pay attention to the world around him. He never once considered it a hoax or a joke; they were a particularly solemn bunch and despite his later predilection for bad jokes, they weren’t lying.

By the time he was old enough to apply for the policing job, he had already been working out in the field for a few years, cutting ties with his parents- or, rather, seeing very little need to go home regularly and check in- and balancing supernatural call-outs with a day job. He saw it less as a job and more of a duty that he had to occasionally undertake, which, he thought, was the right way to view it- nothing to take too much pride in, nothing to brag about; somehow, the crimes he looked at never were the things that needed to be bought up in casual conversation.

His initial application had been accepted without issue. It wasn’t until two days later than the application had been declined and, after some brief consideration, he supposed that this was going to happen. He had applied on a whim, knowing that it was highly unlikely.

The problem was that his record was not exactly clean. He had been seventeen when he had been charged with assault and though the black mark was largely gone from most records- he was a minor at the time, the crime occurring almost a decade ago- he didn’t quite regret it either. He had not admitted that he regretted not finishing the job, getting caught before he could do what he’d been taught, but he felt that was more accurate. He wasn’t allowed to explain why he had done it- he already knew, back then, that no one would believe his stories of a mass-murdering supernatural entity, and hadn’t bothered to try- and he had accepted the punishment.

The scare tempered some of his excess energy a little. He had always been a little reckless as a teenager, too fired up about the world he was allowed to experience through sheer luck, but talk of court cases reminded him what happened to the hunters who got caught. He had gotten lucky the first time, getting away with minimal sentencing due to a first offence, and he had used it as a cautionary tale for himself. He reminded himself to dispatch enemies as quickly and painlessly as possible, to cover his tracks when he didn’t have someone around to do it for him.

He wasn’t as tied to the supernatural world as some of his peers. He heard about legacies, about how certain last names commanded power in their circles because they had raised militant generations of hunters… but he wasn’t one of them. The hunting world had never heard of an Oakley before he’d come along and though he occasionally felt as though he had stumbled into it, he also thought that his lack of legacy was a good thing; no one was expecting him to be the best. They merely expected him to do his job without fanfare. As such, occasionally, he considered the other side- how little of a ripple might be felt if he decided to step back one day and pursue something else. All of his preferred hobbies were, admittedly, things that kept him ready for another fight, but they didn’t have to be if he didn’t want to.

But then he would think about the ripples his disappearance would make. Someone would lose a hunting partner. He had weaknesses, he knew, like anyone else; he had someone around to reign in his worst habits in turn. He would no longer have the same connections, and he would rather keep the family he had made. Perhaps most importantly, when he put it into perspective, he would lose the effect he could have; when he wasn’t expected at work, either of the legitimate or illegitimate kind, he liked to work with the homeless. He spent time in a variety of cities, attempting to teach self-defence.

He didn’t think much of his failed application nowadays. He had moved on from it rather quickly, going back to his old job and maintaining his old standards. He considered it a learning experience occasionally, but mostly he thought about what he’d written in the first place; he remembered writing about how he wanted to help people in a way he knew how, how he respected laws a great deal, and how important he felt it was to have a group of people dedicated to both of these things. He still considered himself very much of a product of this, even if the help was a little shakier, even if the organisation he supported nowadays might not be as legal.

What was most important, he felt, was that when he thought about why he did what he did, he was doing it for the right reasons.
