Get you wild, make you leave
HUSBAND // OUTFIT // 554 WORDS
Audrey had learnt to steel her heart against Gerard over the years. It hadn’t been a simple process (quite the opposite, really), but she’d succeeded in burying all the residual feelings she might’ve retained so deep within that she’d willed herself to forget they existed in the first place. All those years ago, they had broken things off for the sake of the pack’s welfare. The pack always came first - to not just Gerard, but her too - and they couldn’t have risked letting their relationship complicate its dynamic. And hence, their affair had reached its natural conclusion. The resentment remained, of course, but Audrey had let it slowly die away; taking her heart along with it. Instead, she had focused on doing her best for the pack, trying to keep it together despite it being on the verge of falling apart - despite it already having fallen apart with Johnny’s exit. And yet, she always felt like she was floundering, like she wasn’t doing enough, despite having tried everything. But what she was most unsure of, was whether or not Gerard actually cared. He was always so caught up in worrying about the greater good, so caught up in being morally upright and “doing the right thing” that she sometimes feared he forgot about the individual needs of his pack members.

Things were changing in the supernatural landscape of London, and Gerard was still frustratingly blind to it. She tried so hard to keep her feelings for Gerard neutral, to not let him affect her like he used to, to avoid engaging with him in any capacity beyond the professional, but the time had arrived for her to confront him. Daniel Heart was steadily gaining power, and word on the street was that he was assembling a coven of dark magic witches. But that wasn’t even their only problem - Johnny was still refusing to cooperate, and the members of their own pack were starting to grow disgruntled and impatient. She needed to spur him into action, to knock some actual sense into him, and she knew she was the only one who could since no one else would volunteer.

She walked into the garages that morning with renewed determination, ready to unleash her wrath on Gerard while simultaneously nervous to face him. It had been a while since she’d spoken so candidly with him. Usually, she just preferred to keep her distance, interacting with him only when it was absolutely necessary. But now, she was about to be in close quarters with him again, about to have a conversation where neither of them could afford to remain ignorant to reality, her heart was beating ridiculously fast. She had to shut her eyes and swallow hard before she finally knocked on Gerard’s office door, sending up a silent prayer to the Gods to give her the strength to get through this unscathed. Once she heard him quietly ask her to come in, she entered, finding him hunched over some papers at his desk. He looked up once she approached and pulled up a chair opposite his. “Gerard,” she greeted stiffly, “We need to talk. And I don’t care if you’re busy at the moment.” She stared directly into his eyes, making it clear that she meant business.

SOMEDAY WHEN YOUR HEAD IS MUCH LIGHTER

Gerard, of course, was acutely aware of the changes his pack was going through. He was tired, naturally, he had been trying to stifle the riffling affects of the changes in werewolf order ever since Johnny had left, and since Daniel’s power had started to become apparent, things had only gotten worse. He had spent the last year trying to grieve, and raise his daughter – who practically never left his side anyway – and he thought his age was starting to show at this point. It had been tiring and stressful, and he had made more mistakes than he could count, lost more loyalties than he would like to admit, and all in the name of trying to look after people. He was starting to lose sight of what it was exactly he was doing, but he had always tried to continue the pack ideals the way his parents would have wanted. It just didn’t seem to be working any more.

He sat at his desk, paperwork as ever, Cleo was being looked after by a nanny – reluctantly, on Gerard’s part, but he needed to work, and keeping Cleo shut away in an office all day with no toys wasn’t fair to her. He would feel better when he could put her in nursery school, he wasn’t sure he was very good at trusting a nanny, and Cleo was always upset when she got left with people she didn’t know well. Despite the amount of work on his desk, he was still worried about her, barely just past her first birthday, the world was still so dangerous for someone with his name, and every time she was out of his sight he feared the worst. He continued to sign his name against things, reading paperwork for the garage, the tea shop and his pack until the words blurred together. It wasn’t unusual for this process to be interrupted by someone who needed him – a disgruntled customer, or a pack member with concerns, he did his best for people, but he had to always have the bigger picture in mind, or the pack would fall even further apart. It was no surprise when his door received a knock, and wearily, he called to allow them in, supposing he could use a break from the cramp in his hands.

He was surprised to see Audrey, she was an integral member of the pack, but he understood these days being alone together was not something either of them tended to do unless they had to. Still, he could only presume that meant it was important and he frowned at her for a moment. He put his pen down slowly on the desk, and gestured she could take a seat if she so wished, leaning back on his own for a moment, needing to briefly stretch. ”Something wrong?” He asked, clearly concerned, but of course, he was busy and unless it was urgent he liked to hope that by now she could take care of most things without too much help from him.

Get you wild, make you leave
HUSBAND // OUTFIT // 300 WORDS
It was infuriating how calm Gerard looked, but Audrey was almost used to his preternatural tendency to look calm and collected at all times. He was always like that - stable, neutral, and...unreadable. Audrey, on the other hand, was almost always an open book, wearing her emotions on her sleeve; her vulnerabilities on full display. He was staring at her expectantly, waiting for her to speak, and she suddenly felt tongue-tied, no longer sure of what she came here to say. But she knew she couldn’t falter now, so she forced herself to take a deep breath and continued to maintain her somewhat defensive stance. “Everything’s wrong Gerard,” she replied sternly, “Ever since Johnny left, the pack’s not what it used to be. I can see them drifting apart, slowly losing their faith in us. And Daniel’s shady activities aren’t making things any easier.” She paused, heaving a tired sigh. “We can’t keep sitting on our hands and doing nothing.”

Audrey was a little stunned by her own outspokenness. When she’d marched into Gerard’s office all resolute and tenacious, she hadn’t exactly expected herself to successfully go through with the conversation. However much she tried to keep her personal feelings for Gerard separate from the professional, she knew that she was never entirely immune to him. And so, to have confronted him head-on without any of that emotional messiness was almost empowering, self-assuring. It told her that she could, indeed, stand up to him when the situation demanded it; that she could question his authority and give him reality checks when he needed them. She suddenly felt more courageous; bold enough to add, “You haven’t really been the most proactive of leaders lately. You need to rise to the occasion.”

SOMEDAY WHEN YOUR HEAD IS MUCH LIGHTER

He supposed he should have known when she had that look on her face that said she meant business - a look he had once found endearing, no less - that he was probably in for some sort of talking to. Still, he found himself remarkably unprepared for her tone, and the strangeness of being told off by Audrey, who usually did all that was possible to avoid him. He trusted her opinion like no one else's, of course, it was invaluable to him, and he wasn't sure she always knew that. Even so, he did not always share his own feelings with her, in regard to the pack of course, the time for their personal feelings long in the past. He wished he knew how to appease her, she seemed so worried. Even if Gerard did not see any immediate threat to them, to some degree she was not wrong. He was so concerned with keeping them all safe that he was taking no steps forwards in fear of worse happening to them.

"Can you blame me?" Was his answer, finally, after a long considered look at her, having allowed her to finish talking. He had lost so much already, his entire family, almost, half his pack, he could not bear to lose more. "I've been trying to put this pack together, I can't just take swipes at Johnny or Daniel and not think about the consequences for this pack - it's better this way, we're safer if we stay out of it." He knew, of course, that he was so focused on the big picture that he was not watching to see what fell through the cracks. As long as most of them were safe that was all he thought he could do. He wished Audrey could understand this, because it was clear she was not going to agree with him so easily.
